AISTech 2023: RATH presents energy saving refractory solutions that help the steel industry to act more sustainably

Reducing pollutant emissions, optimizing energy use – the steel industry is also facing the major challenge of acting more sustainably and drastically reducing its carbon footprint. Ambitious efforts are underway, and RATH is intensively supporting its customers. The Austrian refractory manufacturer shows how this can be done at AISTech 2023 (Detroit), North America's largest annual iron and steel technology conference and exhibition, and presents energy-saving refractory solutions as well as hot gas filter elements to filter particle-laden industrial flue gases. These are just some of the topics you can learn more about at the RATH booth at AISTech (in May 8-11).

Vienna, April 13, 2023

For more than 130 years, RATH has been burning for refractory products and is one of the most renowned specialists for refractory technology – especially heat treatment in the steel industry. RATH’s application engineers know the heat treatment industry’s requirements and processes down to the last detail and are sought-after experts when it comes to processing and coordinating refractory supplies for heat treatment furnaces worldwide. The internationally active Austrian refractory manufacturer offers a comprehensive range of premium refractory solutions and products for the entire spectrum of continuously or discontinuously operated steel heat treatment furnaces. In addition, RATH is ready for the future: RATH refractory materials can also be used to line electrically heated and also hydrogen-fired furnaces. At the RATH booth, AISTech visitors can find out more about energy-saving refractory solutions that help companies reduce their CO2 footprint.

RATH makes heat treatment furnaces more energy-efficient – with combi modules
Whether high-temperature wool, lightweight refractory bricks, concretes or dense bricks, the RATH engineering experts always find the best technical and economical solution for the requirements of the heat treatment industry. “For example, a bogie hearth forging furnace is lined with a mix of different RATH products: RATH Combi-modules in the upper furnace and roof, but dense castable solutions for the lower walls and the kiln car, which guarantees optimum, energy-efficient lining”, says Richard Jaeger, Managing Director of the Sales Unit Metals, Fuels, Chemicals & Energy, RATH Group. Combi-modules are one of many proven products RATH relies on, e. g. for the refractory lining of forging furnaces: a combination of different high-temperature wool qualities provides a technically and economically optimal solution for the customer. “These modules are available according to specific customer requirements and are produced at the RATH plants in a wide variety of shapes and sizes – they’ll also be shown at the RATH booth”, summarizes Richard Jaeger.

RATH also specializes in hot gas filter elements to filter particle-laden industrial flue gases
A company with more than 130 years of experience in refractory technology is also predestined for hot gas filtration. So it’s only logical that the internationally renowned refractory manufacturer also specializes in this field. For many years, RATH has been developing innovative ceramic hot gas filter elements, which make it possible to filter particle-laden industrial flue gases at temperatures up to 1000 °C and to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides. RATH will present a RATH hot gas filter element at AISTech.

Bundling of hot gas filtration competence at RATH’s Meißen production facility
Since 2016, all resources, capabilities and know-how in hot gas filtration have been pooled at the Meißen facility (Germany). This RATH research and production site is home to cutting-edge facilities for the manufacture of RATH's FILTRATH® hot gas filter cartridges and FILTRATH®CAT catalytic filter elements. The latter were developed for pollutant emission control: These rigid yet highly porous and catalytically coated ceramic filter elements are used for multiple pollutant control of (fine) dust, acid gases, dioxins and nitrogen oxides in hot gas flows (at temperatures of 250°-420 °C) and can easily replace conventional textile filters.

Doubling of production capacity for hot gas filter elements
Recently, RATH has doubled its production capacity for both catalytic and non-catalytic hot gas filter elements at its Meißen production facility.” As the only remaining European manufacturer of filter elements, RATH can produce up to 40,000 filter elements per year, depending on the required dimensions and quality”, says Manfred Salinger, Director Advanced Ceramic Filtration Solutions RATH Group. The new production line is already in operation and running at the highest efficiency level.

Meet the RATH experts at AISTech 2023 (May 8-11, Detroit) at booth 2099 and learn more about the premium refractory solutions for the steel industry as well as the innovative RATH hot gas filter elements.
