April 22-24, 2024: 5. Freiberger Feuerfest-Symposium High-caliber industry meeting with in-depth discussions on the topic “Refractory materials and the energy transition: spanning the gap between necessities, challenges and opportunities"

Vienna, March 15, 2024
Around 150 experts from industrial furnace and plant engineering as well as from the application technology sector are expected to attend alongside installation companies, refractory manufacturers and representatives from research and development, and more than 20 specialist presentations are on the program: Once more, there is great interest in the symposium in Freiberg in central Saxony, which is jointly organized by Deutsche Keramische Gesellschaft (the German Ceramic Society), Deutsche Gesellschaft Feuerfest- und Schornsteinbau (the German Society for Refractory and Chimney Construction) and RATH AG.
As in other industrial sectors, the sustainable use of resources and associated efforts to reduce the CO₂ footprint have become increasingly prevalent in the refractory industry. The presentation topics reflect this and will discuss these issues intensively over the three days of the event. “We are delighted that the Freiberger Feuerfest-Symposium is once again attracting so much interest. Especially as the energy transition is a topic that occupies all of us in the industry on a daily basis, creating significant tension between necessities, challenges and opportunities. We are looking forward to gaining in-depth and very practical insights into how the new and ongoing development of refractory materials is impacted by this, and what concrete solutions might look like in the numerous presentations," says Andreas Pfneiszl, Speaker of the Executive Board, RATH AG. For example, the latest developments on the use of hydrogen in connection with refractory materials in the decarbonization of industrial processes will be presented. Other presentation topics will include energy optimization from research to production, construction and project planning through to use, and the sustainable use of raw materials, with the explicit inclusion of raw material recycling.Intelligent maintenance, repair and servicing to improve durability and extend the service life of refractory linings and increase system availability are further topics that the experts will address in detail. The series of talks will be opened by Prof. Klaus Dieter Barbknecht, Principal of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and Vice Chair, Strategic Leadership Communities of the World Energy Council, who will present the topic "Key Aspects of the Energy Crisis – Market Failure".
About the Freiberger Feuerfest-Symposium
What began as a seminar for a small circle of experts and initially consisted of around 90 participants has continually grown in popularity since then: The event, which stands for intensive discussions on technological process engineering and high-caliber professional exchange has become a fixed institution in the industry and is held every two years.
